Can Mindfulness Help With ADHD Management?

adhd-treatment-nyc

If you are suffering from ADHD, you won’t need anyone to tell you how upsetting and distracting the entire condition can be. ADHD affects everything in your life, including your job, your relationships, and the amount of control you have over everything you hold dear.

Here at Trifecta Health, we have years of experiencing of helping people just like you. We have a range of treatment methods available, all delivered under the watchful eye of Dr. Edward Fruitman, M.D.. Of course treatment also starts at home, and there are many self help methods which can work hand in hand with more formal treatment options.

Have you heard of mindfulness?

Mindfulness is derivative of meditation, and is very successful at calming the mind and creating a sense of order. A person suffering with ADHD will have periods of hyperactivity and feeling completely out of control, and mindfulness can be very useful at gaining back control and helping that person feel like they have a lot more control than the realise.

What is Mindfulness?

No, it isn’t mumbo jumbo! Mindfulness is easy to practice, and it is actually one of the more simpler methods of meditation around. Anyone can practice mindfulness, and the more you do it, the easier it will become. Mindfulness helps you to be more ‘in the moment’, more appreciative of what is around you, and a lot calmer as a result.

In terms of helping with ADHD, mindfulness can help you to control your mind and resist distractions that would otherwise throw your day off course. It can help you to avoid impulsive behaviour, become more focused overall, and give you total control of your emotions, which may otherwise run way with you and cause serious ups and downs.

Mindfulness can be a challenge to practice at first, because it means being able to concentrate and focus, which ADHD sufferers can often struggle with. For this reason, start slowly and use mindfulness for very short periods of time to start with. As you become more used to it, you can increase the amount of time you spend in a mindful moment.

How to Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be as simple as focusing on the things around you. For instance, when you are walking down the street, instead of listening to music on your cell phone or thinking of the million things you need to do, take a breath and look around you. Focus your attention on the leaves on the trees, the feel of the air against your skin, the sound of the rain, whatever is around you. You need to completely focus on that item and really feel it in every one of your senses. The more you can do this, easier it will become over time.

Mindfulness can also be practiced via an app, and this could be a way to begin for an ADHD sufferer. You can find many free apps to download, and they will give you guided mindfulness meditation instructions. By following the instructions, visualising, and doing your best to shut out the noise from outside, you will be able to take hold of the benefits coming your way.
